Solutions exist that could reduce Guelph Transit’s often overcrowded buses

The siren song of "fare-free public transit" is loud, politically magnetic, and undeniably appealing. Who wouldn’t want to step onto a bus or board a train without hunting for a transit card or loose change? Yet, while eliminating fares sounds like a progressive silver bullet for urban mobility, it often addresses the wrong problem.

Getting on the GO train at Guelph is no easy feat for the unfamiliar. The station building is closed and there are no GO employees around to ask for assistance. And the instructions on the ticket machines on the platform are hard to follow.
