If you have ever found yourself standing at a bus stop wondering why transit decisions are made the way they are, or if you’re trying to advocate for better service in your neighborhood, there is one book you absolutely need to read.
Jarrett Walker’s Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking About Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives does an excellent job of explaining how to create a public transit system that actually satisfies people. It breaks down the ins and outs of transit planning into an easy-to-understand format using simple layman’s terms. A revised edition is now available.
At the Transit Action Alliance of Guelph (TAAG), we highly recommend this book for anyone on City Council, City Staff, Transit Planners, as well as community members who support or use transit themselves.
Understanding the Core Concepts
Transit planning is often filled with tough trade-offs—such as balancing coverage (providing basic service everywhere) versus frequency (providing fast, reliable service where demand is highest). Walker’s book provides the framework needed to understand these choices so communities can have clearer, more productive conversations about their mobility goals.
For a quick dive into these concepts, check out this fantastic summary of the book, courtesy of the Manitoba Eco-Network, sums up some of the key points in an easy to follow document. (Note this is for the first edtion, a revised edition is now available)

Mapping Choices: "Abundant Access"
One of the foundational concepts Walker emphasizes is "Abundant Access"—the idea that transit’s ultimate goal is to expand the number of places a person can reach in a reasonable amount of time, giving people freedom of choice in their daily lives.
The chart below (featured in Walker's blog post, “Abundant Access: a map of a community’s transit choices”) acts as a visual guide to critical parts of the book and showcases its central themes:

TAAG will be presenting specific details and ideas from Human Transit and exploring how they can directly benefit Guelph and help shape the future of Guelph Transit. Look for them in our blog posts.
